Feature Teacher Joan Martinolich

We are thrilled to announce our Early Childhood Feature Teacher this month is Mrs. Joan Martinolich. Ms. Joan is a team lead teacher in our Pre-K Fours program. We have been blessed to have her at Parish Day School since 2016. Ms. Joan brings years of Early Childhood experience and a love of learning to her Fours classroom. She creates a nurturing and warm classroom environment for her children to learn and explore. We are so thankful for all Ms. Joan brings to Parish Day School and are honored to give her this much deserved recognition. Congratulations, Mrs. Joan Martinolich!

How did you decide to get into the field of Early Childhood Education?

In 1996, our family of five relocated to Virginia Beach from Long Island, N.Y. While settling in here, I was a stay at home mom until my youngest daughter began school. I began doing a little volunteering at her preschool, which led to a part time job, which turned into a 22 year career!

Do you have a role model that inspired you?

My sister was an elementary school teacher at a private catholic school. I always admired her dedication and wonderful relationships she had with her students and families. Through the years, I

have been blessed to work with so many wonderful teachers who have inspired me to be a better teacher.

What makes Parish Day School special to me?

My 22 years in Early Childhood Education has taught me that we need to respect each child's abilities, and promote learning in a fun and exciting way. Parish Day School gives us that ability everyday, with a loving Christian environment, the wonderful play-based programs we promote, and a fabulous playground, and the beautiful outdoor space we provide.

What is your favorite thing about being part of the Parish Day School Team?

I love coming to work and being a part of a wonderful teaching staff. Every member of this school is committed to bringing out the best in every child. We are all here to support each other. I have created so many wonderful bonds with teachers and families through my years here.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy has always been to make learning fun, and bring out the best in every student. I believe children truly love to learn with hands-on activities, and play time.

Do you have a favorite time of year at Parish Day School?

My favorite time of year has to be Spring. To be able to show the children first hand, in our classrooms, the creation of life, with our Egg to Chicken, and Caterpillar to Butterfly life cycles. It is such a wonderful learning experience. There is nothing better than watching their faces as they watch the day to day progression, and finally seeing God's creations of chicks hatching, and butterflies spreading their wings.

Do you have a favorite quote or motto?

I will borrow this from Teddy Roosevelt (I know, I'm old!)

"Believe you can, and you're halfway there!"
